Fibrous dysplasia

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a congenital skeletal disease characterized by the presence of bone lesions containing fibrous connective tissue. FD occurs in monoostotic or polyostotic form. Rarely, fibrous dysplasia is part of McCune-Albright syndrome together with "café au lait" cutaneous hyperpigmentations and endocrine hyperfunction (especially pubertas praecox, thyrotoxicosis, Cushing's syndrome, etc.). Clinical symptomatology depends on the extent of the bone disease. Most bone lesions in FD are asymptomatic, with a minority of bone lesions manifesting as pain, bone deformity, or pathological fracture. The following article provides a brief overview...

Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) as a tool for secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures has been proven to increase effectivity of patients´ care after osteoporotic fracture. FLS in Klatovy Hospital increased 6 times number of DXA measurements and 4-times the number of treated patients within first 6 months of implementation. There have been started 2 FLS projects in the Czech Republic in 2021. National pilot multicentric study OSTEO with 10 active participating centers verifying implementation of FLS protocols in the Czech Republic. Next project is "Q-osteoporosis". Every third female and every fifth male over 50 years of age suffer from osteoporotic fracture. Approximately 15,000 patients with hip fracture in the Czech Republic are hospitalized every year, and nearly 25 % of them die within one year of the complications associated with this injury. Additionally, initial osteoporotic fracture increases the risk of another subsequent fracture by 2-5fold.
