Clin Osteol 2021; 26(1): 29-34

Steel syndrome is an ultra-rare autosomal recessive disease affecting primarily the skeletal system. It is characterized by short stature, bilateral hip and radial head dislocations, carpal coalitions, scoliosis and pes cavus. Other features of the disease are facial dysmorphism, long oval face, prominent forehead, hypertelorism, macrocephaly, low-lying ears, brachydactyly or hearing loss. Steel syndrome is caused by mutations in the Col27A1 gene encoding the pro-alpha chain of fibrillar collagen type XXVII. We report an extremely rare case of an 8-year-old girl with mild skeletal dysplasia, constitutively delayed growth, hypertelorism and facial...

Pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib: a case report and review of literature

Clin Osteol 2021; 26(1): 40-44

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a group of rare hereditary diseases caused by tissue resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH), there are two main types I and II. Type I is divided into subtypes. The authors present a case of PHP Ib with hypocalcemia accidentally detected at childbirth. After the unsuccessful treatment of hypocalcemia, the etiology was considered. Although PHP was considered and treatment was tried, the confirmation of the diagnosis and the treatment were not adequately tightened. Years later, PHP Ib has been genetically confirmed. By adjusting the treatment, the difficulties subsided and the effect of PTH on bone was reduced, which...

Halmová Henrieta, Halm Filip, Vaňuga Peter, Sičák Marián, Szépe Peter, Slávik Matej

Clin Osteol 2021; 26(1): 45-53

The two most common causes of hypercalcemia are the primary hyperparathyroidism and the malignant tumors. Etiology of primary hyperparathyroidism is frequently associated with adenoma of parathyroid gland, less frequently with hyperplasia of parathyroid gland and rarely with carcinoma of parathyroid gland. In below presented clinical case we demonstrate the rare case of the premenopausal woman indicated with an anamnesis of bone pain, densitometric examination showed significantly decreased bone density and laboratory results proved hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia and significantly increased parathormone level. After successful surgery of the right...

Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy: a case report

Lokočová Eva; Horák Pavel

Clin Osteol 2021; 26(1): 54-58

Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy and lactation is rare clinical condition resulting in acute back or hip pain in the event of an osteoporotic fracture. The etiology and pathogenesis of osteoporosis in pregnancy is not clear, the influence of abnormal hormonal effects on calcium metabolism and genetic predisposition is assumed, and pre-existing osteopathy is also a question. A detailed examination to assess secondary etiology is always necessary. The treatment of osteoporosis associated with pregnancy and lactation is based on adequate calcium and vitamin D substitution. Indications for therapy of osteoporosis are assessed individually, taking...
