Diabetes mellitus and osteoporotic fractures are important causes of morbidity and mortality in elderly patients. Recently published studies have confirmed an increased risk of hip fractures and vertebral fractures in type 1 and also type 2 diabetes when compared to the healthy population. The etiopathogenic link between these chronic diseases is poorly understood. Increased bone fragility in pa tients with diabetes mellitus is caused by many factors such as advanced glycation end products, abnormal renal function, changes in insulin levels or the influence of some antidiabetic drugs. This article gives an overview of risk factors for developing bone...

Male osteoporosis is a condition with an increasing incidence and relatively high mortality associated with fractures. A secondary etio logy is quite common, mostly contributed to by deficiency of sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol), other diseases and medication use. Prior to treatment initiation, a secondary etiology should be clearly ruled out. A significant role in the prevention and treatment is played by modification of lifestyle factors (physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc.) and sufficient calcium and vitamin D supplementation. In the treatment of male osteoporosis, bisphosphonates are currently used. If taken regularly,...

The aim of the paper is to compare the contribution of three imaging methods used in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma in accor dance with recent guidelines. Conventional radiography is easily accessible and economically convenient examination which is re commended in all patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. Its limitations are low sensitivity and high percentage of false-ne gative findings. Therefore, it should not remain the "gold standard" but should be supported with more sophisticated methods. Magnetic resonance imaging provides significant contribution with higher sensitivity and specificity. It enables to assess bone marrow processes...
Vascular calcification - a 21st century epidemicReview articles
S. Boček
Clin Osteol 2013; 18(4): 148-152
Vascular wall calcification is an active process with complex regulation. It is contributed to by numerous mechanisms also involved in bone mineralization. Population ageing, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus are accompanied by an inc reased prevalence of extraosseous calcification, mainly in the aortic valve region and arterial walls. There are five basic clinical mani festations of vascular calcification: calcific aortic valve stenosis, medial calcific sclerosis, intimal calcification in atherosclerosis, vascu lar calcification in chronic kidney disease and calcific uremic arteriolopathy. These types of calcification...
