Objective: The primary goal was to determine the effect of glucocorticoid replacement th lected parameters of calcium and phosphate (Ca-Ph) metabolism and selected bone markers. Patients and methods: The group comprised 46 patients with Addison's disease (12 males, 17 pre- and 17 postmenopausal females). In all subjects, their basic parameters of Ca-Ph metabolism, bone markers and adrenal hormo determined using the DXA method in the lumbar spine (BMDlumb) and in the forearm (MBDfore). Results: No difference was found in the prevalence of osteoporosis or osteopenia in the study group when compared with a control group. BMD was not shown to be dependent...

Osteoporosis and obesity are continuously growing in prevalence. A longstanding clinical practice has pointed out, that obese women do not get osteoporosis; however, some studies have challenged that tenet. The aim of our study was to investigate the relation betwe en obesity, serum adipocytokines and bone metabolism in postmenopausal women. In a group of 123 postmenopausal women, lower incidence of osteoporosis was confirmed in obese women (9,9 %) in comparison with non-obese women (21,6 %). Significantly higher leptin and RANKL concentrations as well as lower OPG/RANKL ratio were found in obese women. There was significant positive correlation between...

Background: An increase in bone mass is most rapid during puberty and it continues until approximately 20 to 25 years of age. Epi demiological studies of osteoporotic fractures suggest the importance of reaching peak bone mineral density during adolescence. Patients and methods: The study comprised 69 healthy girls aged 16 to 19 years. At the start of the study and one year later, their bone mineral density in the proximal femur and lumbar spine was measured using the DXA scan and their serum osteocalcin and CTX levels were determined. Over the year, 32 girls were using contraception containing 30 pg of traception containing 15 pg of ethinylestradiol...

Authors review actual knowledge about problem of relation of systemic sclerosis and osteoporosis. On the basis of published data sys temic sclerosis can not be confirmed as an independent risk factor of osteoporosis. Many other factors coincide here: preliminary me nopause, low muscle mass, low fat mass, low BMI, extension of cutaneous defects, presence of calcinosis, other organs damage and drugs. Seriousness of bone injury is comparable with that seen in rheumatoid arthritis.
