Aims: Vitamin D plays an important role in the normal bone mineralization and its deficiency is a risk factor for osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Vita min D deficiency negatively impairs calcium and phosphate metabolism and trigger parathyroid hormone (PTH) increase. Low levels of vitamin D, calcium and phosphate have also been linked to increase in hip fractures in elderly women. The aim of this study was to evaluate relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 OHD) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25 OHD) in postmenopausal women. Methods: This retrospective study included 157 postmenopausal Caucasian women,...

Bone myeloma with a varying degree of skeletal involvement is a typical sign of one of the most common malignant haematological diseases - multi ple myeloma. In cases of a discreet involvement of the axial skeleton without typical osteolytic lesions and in the absence of clear laboratory findings the diagnosis of this disease may at first be somewhat difficult - the consequence are possible diagnostic errors and an inadequate and late initiation of specific treatment. Clin Osteol 2006; 11(2-3): 51-56
Calciphylaxis is a rare and for the most part lethal disorder of calcium-phosphate (Ca-P) metabolism. It occurs primarily in patients on dialysis and after kidney transplantation. The pathogenesis of this condition has, as yet, not been unravelled and in consequence all treatment is only symptoma tic. It is a necrotic affection of the epidermis and dermis due to an extensive calcinosis of the arteriole media, which often goes hand in hand with a se condary infection of these areas and the development of a generalized septic condition - in most instances resulting in the patient's death. The letha lity of this disease depends, among other things,...
