Relationship between vitamin D3 and sex hormones in patients with coronary artery diseaseOriginal contributions
There have been some reports about possible effects of vitamin D3 on sex hormones levels in males but the results are controversial. The study compared the levels of sex hormones (total testosterone, FAI, FSH and LH) in 72 patients with acute coronary syndrome whose levels of vitamin D3 were sufficient (> 30 pg/L) or insufficient (< 30 pg/L). With increasing age, levels of FAI declined signifi cantly. Patients with insufficient vitamin D3 levels had significantly higher levels of FSH and LH compared to those sufficient vitamin D3 levels (8.04 vs 5.5 IU/L, p = 0.027, and 10.5 vs 6.5 IU/L, p = 0.025, respectively). Thus, vitamin D3 insufficiency is associated with "subclinical" or "compensated" hypogonadism.
