Malignancy-associated hypercalcemia - a case reportOriginal contributions
Reported is a case of a 56-year-old woman who was treated for hematological malignancy. At the same time, she was diagnosed with severe hypercalcemia which at first was successfully conservatively managed. But hypercalcemia recurred and, in addition to the susual infusion and pharmacological therapy, repeated hemodialysis had to be administered, together with multiple chemotherapy cycles to treat the underlying condition. Over her hospital stay lasting for several months, however, progression of the underlying diseases could not be inhibited and the patient died. The first part of the article is concerned with the definition, epidemiology, diagnosis and treat ment of hypercalcemia in malignancies; the second part contains the case report, discussion and conclusion.
