Risk factors for osteoporosis and the importance of FRAX for primary care physiciansOriginal contributions

S. Tomková, B. Suchá, P. Jackuliak

Osteoporosis is a disease that may be reliably diagnosed, treated and prevented. Improved diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis should be an important priority of primary care physicians. The article is concerned with a survey of primary care physicians' gene ral knowledge of osteoporosis and their awareness of densitometry indications. The general knowledge was ascertained using a ques tionnaire on risk factors, drugs and diseases associated with osteoporosis as well as the prevalence and mortality of the condition. The results showed relatively poor general knowledge. There were statistically insignificant differences in knowledge depending on gender, length of practice and size of the settlement. There was inadequate awareness of densitometry indications and insufficient use of questionnaires for early identification of patients with risk factors for osteoporosis. The survey pointed to a need for continuing edu cation of physicians in this area. It also suggested that the FRAX questionnaire may be used to determine th res in a particular patient.
