Role of leptin in metabolic processes during prenatal and early postnatal lifeReview articles
Leptin is a cytokine-like hormone encoded by the ob (obese) gene located on chromosome 7. It is composed of 167 amino acids. The hormone is secreted by a number of cells, including chondrocytes, osteoblasts and placenta cells (adipocytes are the main sour ce). It influences bone metabolism during prenatal life, by binding to receptors on ventromedial hypothalamic neurons, osteoblasts and chondrocytes. There is a positive correlation between serum levels of leptin and IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) in cord blood and the ponderal index (relationship between birth weight and height). It is higher in the blood of newborns with high birth weight. Leptin serum levels are statistically significantly lower in preterm newborns. Breast milk is the main external source of leptin during early postnatal life. IGF-1 levels are nutritionally regulated during the first years of life and associated elevated leptin levels might be a reaction to intrauterine growth restriction.
