The place of kinesiotherapy in the management of osteoporosisArticles

E. Ďurišová, J. Zvarka

Aims: Assesment of the efficiency of regular exercise as part of the comprehensive appoach to the management of female patients with postmenopau sal osteoporosis.

Methods: Eighty-nine postmenopausal age women were included in the study, showing predominantly sedentary lifestyles and presenting with densitometrically verified osteoporosis according to the WHO criteria. None of the women in the group had osteoporotic fracture in her medical history. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups (Exercise-A and Control-K). The patients of both groups were taking: 60 mg raloxifene, 1 000 mg calcium, 800 IU vitamin D daily. The observation period was 12 months. Densitometric and x-ray examination were performed at the baseline and after one year. The parameters monitored included: biochemistry (S-Ca, S-P, U-Ca/24 hr., bone formation and bone resorption markers), back pain, grip strength, muscle test of selected muscles.

Results: A significant increase in bone density could be observed in both groups, the results being more significant for the exercise group (A: p < 0,01, K: p < 0,05). Biochemical markers of bone resorption significantly dropped in both groups (A: p < 0,01, K: p < 0,05), muscle strength increased signifi cantly (A: p < 0,01), and back pain showed a significant relief (A: p < 0,05).

Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the exercise therapy administered to the group of postmenopausal women studied was efficient. Regular exercise should become a natural conponent of the comprehensive management of osteoporosis.
